Mother’s Day is coming up and I’m pretty sure everyone’s bustling with excitement. Kids are trying to figure out what gift is worthy enough for their mom and mother’s are trying to subtly leave hints of gifts they’d like to receive.

Well I’m in the same boat because to this day I don’t think I’ve gotten my mom a gift that I was content with. I think my best work might’ve been a card I made with wax crayons and colored paper. The only problem is that was in basic school/preschool and I was 5 so any gift was special.

Times have changed and I’m really not trying to break the bank for one holiday (even though she deserves it) so I created a list of affordable gift ideas and I’ll be sharing them with you. These gifts are all under $30 with the exception of two that may vary in price.

Spa Day

Just thinking about having a day of relaxation with people pampering me - massages, facials and a mani-pedi - has me (and I’m pretty sure you too) tingling with excitement. So imagine how our mothers would feel about being gifted one?  I’ve been considering a 60 minute Swedish massage with a charcoal facial and a mani-pedi to complete the package but sadly I haven’t been able to find a salon that has this on offer. I really recommend this as a gift because this will have your Mom’s body buzzing for days and trust me, she’ll love you. Plus it could work as a last minute Mother's Day gift  diynyr those of you who genuinely forgot or didn't have time to get something extravagant.

Self Care Basket

Now this is where affordability drops in - you can literally buy a bunch of "cheap" gifts for your mom and make one big gift. This gift might need some creativity but it’s nothing a YouTube video can't fix. You’ll need  collection of skin care/self care items and a straw basket but if you prefer a box then that works too. The idea behind this basket or box is to compile different types of skin care products that you believe your mom will like. I’m talking:
  • Sheet masks
  • Peel off masks
  • Face scrubs
  • Body scrubs
  • Hand masks
  • Foot masks
  • A body massager
  • Exfoliating sponges
  • Body oils
Basically anything you can think of that will help her relax and act like an at-home spa treatment. You can even throw in a book or two because reading is a subtle form of self care. Go crazy if you have to - she's your mom and I know you want to spoil her.

Hair Product Bundle

This bundle is on the simpler side but it still can be special if it’s a bundle of products from a brand your mom likes. So if you noticed that her hair Mousse is running low just surprise her with the full product line #gobigorDONTgohome. My mom is almost always trying to sneak some of my hair products for her hair and my little sister’s so I know she’d appreciate this as a gift. Plus buying the full line works out better than buying the products individually and if you’re lucky (and dependent on the brand) there might be extra goodies in the box. All that’s left is for you to write a sweet message and wrap the bundle.

An Outfit

By an outfit I mean a top, bottom, shoes and accessories. Try to get her a complete look that works well together and will make her feel like a foxy mama. It doesn’t have to be anything too expensive but something that she’ll feel comfortable wearing and feel confident in. To make it extra special you can take her out (on a mini date or something), hype her up and have a mini photo shoot. That way she’ll have a physical memory of the night. This would also be great because it’ll let her know that she’s still got it even though she had you 20+ years ago.

Household Items

My mother is the type of person that would pass on spending money on herself just so that she can buy something for her house. She’ll literally buy a wall ornament that's on sale instead of a new pair of jeans. If your mom is anything like mine then buying her household items would work just as good as these other gifts or even have a stronger effect. Like I said earlier, you can keep it simple and buy things like picture frames, potted plants, candles, or trinket boxes. OR you can go crazy and buy her a new fridge, washing machine or a tv. You know her best so it’s up to you!

Something Handmade

There’s nothing a mother loves more than a handmade gift from their child - it'll be like your very own diy project. The kind that shows that you don’t have any money to buy something nice but you still care enough to try. In our childhood days a card would do but since we’re older we can step it up a notch. Things like a decorative picture frame, a photo collage, or an album, earrings, bath-bombs and customized jewelry can work. If you’re not too artistic you can stick to something simple but meaningful like a keychain for her car/house keys - something she’ll take with her whenever she goes out. Try to make it something meaningful because the more mushy it is the more she’ll love it.

So there you have it! 6 Budget Mother’s Day Gift Ideas but we’re not done yet - I’ve added a bonus gift idea below.

**BONUS: A Subscription Box

6 Budget Mother’s Day Gift Ideas, Spa Day/ Treatment, Chevy Takes The Mic, chevytakesthemic, Self Care Basket, face masks, sheet masks, masks, face scrubs, peel off masks, peel off, foot mask, bath bomb, bathbombs, body oil, essential oils, lavender, peppermint, target, target beauty, target beauty box, target beauty box subscription, Walmart, Walmart beauty box, ipsy, ipsy beauty, glam bags, ipsy glam bags, make up, make up brushes, makeup products, diy, key chains, keychain, picture frames, candles, scented oils, incense, Hair Product Bundle, An Outfit, Household Items, Something Handmade, self care, selfcare, products, natural hair, hair, natural, beauty, beauty products, birchbox, subscriptions, bonus, samples, monthly, natural hair styles, natural hair bundles,

As of late, subscription boxes have been my new obsession and every time I watch an unboxing video I find myself thinking that they would make great gifts. This gift was somewhat my brother’s idea because he’s super lazy and preferred something that took minimal effort on his part i.e. a gift that was already packaged, affordable and offered variety. Basically all the nice stuff so he doesn’t have to do it. This would also be ideal because your mom would end up with a new gift every month (and she wouldn’t even expect it) and you could have the duplicate products or anything that she doesn’t want. So it’s a win-win situation.

Related post: I Think I'm Obsessed with Affordable Subscription Boxes

Yesterday I went a bit crazy and signed of for a bunch of them (Target, Walmart, Birchbox and Ipsy) but the one that I’m most excited for is Birchbox. It’s a monthly subscription that costs $15 per month and you receive 4-6 sample products in your box. If you’re lucky you might get some full-size products every now and then. At first I thought that $15 was a bit much for some beauty products (that I probably wouldn’t use) but they sucked me in with their BOGO coupon. Yup! I got caught in the trap but for my first month I’ll get TWO boxes instead of one.

If you’re interested in getting this subscription for your Mom or even yourself just click the link below and enter the coupon code. The coupon does expire so you have to act quickly.

Blogger Recognition Award - Rules, Advice and Nominees

As I mentioned in my last post (Mystery Blogger Award) I got nominated for the Blogger Recognition Award. This time the nomination is from You Me and Benny so shoutout to Ashli!

Ashli has been nominated for a million other blogging awards and she has her own YouTube channel and Podcast. Check out her blog here, her YouTube channel here and her Podcast here

Blogger Recognition Award Rules

  1. Thank the person that nominated you and share a link to their blog
  2. Write a post on your blog showing the award
  3. Describe the story of why you started blogging
  4. Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers
  5. Nominate 15 other bloggers
  6. Notify nominees

The Origin of Chevy Takes The Mic

I started blogging for two reasons:
a) I felt like I wasn’t doing anything with my life
b) I wanted people to “hear” my voice.

I wanted to have something to my name that wasn’t linked to school work. In a sense I felt that my educational accomplishments were more for my parents than me and I wanted something for myself. So if anyone asked I could easily say that “I’m a Lifestyle Blogger at Chevy Takes The Mic”.
Secondly, as I mentioned on my About page, people used to tell me that I talked too much and somewhat limited myself by  keeping my opinions to myself and listening to others. Now I’m just at the point where I’m going to make myself be heard regardless of what others think. So I started my blog in October 2018 and I’ve been writing posts ever since.

Advice to New Bloggers

  • Enjoy what you write; writing is an extension of you - your beliefs, your experiences and your likes - so make sure you’re writing content that you love and you enjoy. Don’t change your style by trying to keep up with trends or what’s other bloggers are succeeding with. Because the moment you stop writing for you is when writing gets harder and you lose your true readers.
  • Don’t compare your blog to others; seeing the accomplishments of other bloggers and comparing your blog to theirs will only make you feel discouraged. Trust me - I struggle with this everyday. There is always going to be someone with more views, more followers and even a better looking blog theme. Focusing on that will not help to make your blog any better. You need to remind yourself that everyone has their own pace and hard work is what will get you there.

Mystery Blogger Award - My Nomination

In the span of a week I got nominated for two awards - The Mystery Blogger Award and The Blogger Recognition Award - but instead of feeling excited like I normally do I felt disappointed.

On one hand it’s like four awards and I’m still a new blogger - I’m killing the game! But on the other hand it’s like do I really deserve these awards because I’m AM a new blogger? Another thought I have is after I’ve achieved all these awards what’s left for the 10+ years that I’m planning to blog for? Am I going to have to create my own awards?

Anyways, I don’t want to spoil the fun so I’ll follow through with the process.

As I stated before I got nominated for the The Mystery Blogger Award by Sophie from This Brilliant Day. Don’t get me wrong, I might be having mixed feelings about blogging awards but I’m extremely grateful and thankful that Sophie even considered me.

You guys should go check out her blog because her posts are like a breath of fresh air in that they’re different from what a typical blogger would post.

What is the Mystery Blogger Award?

Since I started blogging I’ve seen this award floating around Twitter but like every other blogging award I don’t actually learn about them until I get nominated for it.

So for those of you who are in the same boat as me The Mystery Blogger Award is a blogging award that was created by Okoto Enigma. It recognizes bloggers who have “ingenious posts” that captivates, motivates and inspires the readers. Bloggers who have a passion for blogging and find fun and inspiration from it are also recognized.

Three Things About Chevy

I think I’ve shared a lot of facts about myself already in my previous posts so to avoid repetition (and mostly because I can’t think of anything else) I’ll just link to those other posts.

Go ahead and read these posts if you want to learn more about the true me:

Versatile Blogger Award >

Best Posts on Chevy Takes The Mic

I’ll be judging my best posts on interaction and number of views - basically the posts that get the most love from my readers.

Here are my top three posts (in no specific order):

Questions from Sophie | This Brilliant Day

  1. What is your favorite topic to write about? My favorite topic to write about is my natural hair. I really enjoy my journey and it’s cool that I get to share it with others.
  2. What’s your favorite song or piece of music? My favorite song to this day is Best Part by Daniel Cesar but at the moment I’m leaning towards 2 STEPPIN’ by John Givez because this is the first song bae and I slow-danced to.
  3. What’s your favorite book or a book you’ve enjoyed recently? To be honest I haven’t read any books lately (a part from school textbooks) but I’ve been craving a V.C. Andrews book since forever.
  4. What’s your favorite way to relax? This is going to sound like a scratched record but my favorite way to relax is by binge-watching a tv show
  5. What’s your favorite form of exercise? I kinda enjoy doing squats because they strengthen my legs and butt plus the burn feels good.
  6. Have you ever tried cooking or baking something and it went completely wrong? Yes, EVERY TIME I cook but it just turns into something else flavor wise. Still edible though!

Nominees for the Mystery Blogger Award

And now the hard part - finding 10 other bloggers who I believe need to be recognized. Here are my nominees:

Questions For My Nominees

  1. If you l could only watch one movie for the rest of your life which one would it be?
  2. What article of clothing could you give up for a year?
  3. Cereal then milk or milk then cereal?
  4. What is one thing you will never be caught wearing?
  5. Pineapple on pizza - Definitely or Heck no?

Once again thank you Sophie for the nomination and have fun answering the questions!
