Adventure One

About a year ago I had no idea what bubble tea was or what it even looked like. I’d hear people talk about it in my K-Dramas but I can’t even recall seeing a picture of it (my reliable memory is failing me right now). I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only person in this boat because new trends pop up all the time.
After doing my own research I found out that bubble tea is literally tea with bubbles inside but these bubbles are actually flavoured juice balls (bobas) - the same ones used by some frozen yogurt shops.

Fast forward 8 months and bae and I stumbled upon a bubble tea shop (You, Me and Bubble Tea) in Davison Michigan. We were actually car shopping and parked across the street from the dealership which just so happened to be the same parking lot for the bubble tea shop. Anyways, we quickly ran through the car selections so we could go try some bubble tea. Now that I think about it we were more excited about a cup of tea than a brand new car.

The shop was located on the far left of an oldish-looking small brick building but it kinda seemed out of place because of the bright colours. After we entered it was like we were swished away into candy land. It was just bright and lively with pops of colours everywhere. The shop literally matched the drink being sold. As soon as we entered the two workers knew we were bubble tea newbies - it’s like they could smell us from a mile away. By the time we finished looking at everything and got to the counter, they were already recommending samples of the bubbles. We tried about 5 different flavours each before we made our choice. If I remember correctly, I chose oolong tea with passionfruit bubbles and mango stars (it’s the Jamaican in me). Bae, on the other hand, got green tea with peach and pomegranate bubbles.

To me, the bubble tea tasted more like juice than tea but I guess it had to do with the type of tea base I chose. It was really delicious and the bubbles made it ten times better - every time one popped it was like a burst of fruit flavour. We also got some macaroons to go along with our teas.

Can you believe that 5 mins after taking this picture I spilt my cup of bubble tea?  All because I was trying to stuff my face; luckily I already drank half of it.

And that my friend was how I got sucked into the bubble tea trend. Now EVERY time I log onto Instagram {instagram} or Twitter {twitter} I see people posting pictures of their cup of tea. I have a friend in Malaysia who loves bubble tea - she’s drinking a different type at least twice a week on her Instagram story. I wouldn’t be surprised if she drank 8 cups of bubble tea a day instead of water.

Adventure Two

On Sunday I found yet another bubble tea shop in Genesee Valley Mall - it is literally what people would call a hole in the wall. The shop is squished between two larger retail stores and unless you were standing directly in front of or across from it you’d never know it’s there. I literally walked past the store so many times and it wasn’t all that new either. This past Sunday I went to the mall with the intention of visiting two specific stores - Forever21 and Bath & Body Works - because I knew exactly what I was getting. After leaving Forever21, we met up with some friends in the middle of the mall and it just so happens that it was directly in front of the bubble tea shop (Coco Mo) I had to do it; it was like something was pulling me into the store. I went in, got myself one of their signature drinks and left. Lo and behold, I was back in the shop not even five minutes later for another drink. My first purchase was Mocha Madness - kinda coffee-like drink with milk tea - and I returned to purchase a fruit tea for Bae. After checking over their signature drink list a second time, I caved in and bought a blueberry milk tea... for myself. Is that bad? I mean he didn’t really want a drink and he could’ve always had some of mine.

After buying the second drink I unconsciously started comparing every detail to You, Me and Bubble Tea because in my mind they were the best. The two differences I noticed were: Coco Mo used milk powder for their milk teas and they added ice cubes to their drinks while You, Me and Bubble Tea used a liquid fruit syrup and didn’t add ice. Both of my experiences with bubble tea were amazing and delicious so for as long as this trend is relevant I will be seeking out new shops or at least frequenting these two.

I even considered opening a shop back home in Jamaica but that’s on a whole different level (when I’m bubble tea obsessed). I’ll just stick to being a customer; for now.

    1. It tastes a lot like fruit juice but I guess it depends on what flavor iou choose. Plus the tea changes the taste too.

    1. To each their own I guess. If you ever decide to give it a second try I recommend a fruit flavored one.

    1. Lol it is weird but it depends on the bubbles. For the mocha madness the bubbles were actually squares and had the consistency of jello. But for the fruit teas the bubbles popped almost immediately.
